Safety Tip of the Week
What’s With The Landing Gear?
Some
riders when they get below a certain speed, they shoot their legs
out. It looks like landing gear on a plane. There are so many
things wrong with this very bad habit. The least of which, you
became extremely unstable. Sure you are still holding to the bars
but by design, they pivot. You are about as stable as sitting on a
bar stool with your feet off the floor.
Probably
the worst thing wrong with this habit is your aren’t using your
rear brake. Remember, once you get below 10 mph, you should be off
the front brake and using the rear brake to bring the bike to a
stop. And of course any slow speed maneuvering you may need to be
doing before your stop, you should be lightly dragging your rear
brake.
Last
but not least, you are setting yourself up for a pretty nasty
injury. Suppose you have your landing gear out and you need to
change lanes, dodge a pot hole, oil slick, or even just reposition
yourself. You turn your bars and touch the front brake and guess
what? You are probably going down. Most of the time not so bad at
that speed but if your feet are out and get trapped between the
foot peg and the road, your foot is not only getting crushed but it
is getting rolled and twisted and tearing all the tendons in your
ankle. This is a nasty but common motorcycle injury that can be
avoided.
In
short, if the bike is moving, your feet should be on the pegs or
floor boards.
Road Captains
New Sheriff in town
Bob Bloom is our new Head Road Captain, and doing a
fine job I might add. Please make sure he gets all the sign in sheets and
contact him to make any changes in rides such as leads, sweeps,
times and locations. You may contact him at headroadcaptain@ancientcityhog.com.
I want to remind our road captains that we
have a welcome guest letter on Goggle Docs. Please print off a
couple to give to new guests who show up for rides.

Ride 365

SMART - Smart
Motorcycle And Riding Technique
This is the FDOT
funded class taught by police and sheriff motor officers. It is a
similar format to some of the commercially taught classes that
begin with Ride Like A … I think this is actually better and
it is free, well paid for by tax dollars. Nothing is free. More
instructors, more room, more cones, more personal hands on
instructions. Gainesville Police got their funding again and will
begin classes again in January. Watch the calendar and
future newsletters for details.

Thanks
Thank you Gere for finding and leading us to another
great restaurant in Alachua. Brown's Country Buffet was a big hit
and the ride was beautiful and was carefully navigated to keep us
out of any Gainesville traffic. And thanks Charles for sweeping.
We also had a pretty good turn out Sunday for the Ancient City
Brewery Ride. It was a lot of fun. It was my first time and what a
pleasant surprise. Live music, good food and Adamec gives you 100
bonus points for just showing up. There were even some members or
ex-members that I enjoyed catching up with. I'd like to see
more impromptu rides like this. Late on Sunday gives some a chance
to go to church, or just sleep in after one of our longer
Saturday rides. Paul brought some guests, Rich and Stacy, and
we hope to see more of them. Over all everyone had a good time and
I believe we will be doing more of these Bike Days in the future.
And by the way, thanks Bob for sweeping and to Mike for his last
minute road suggestion to keep us off SR 16 on a Sunday, good
call.
Joe Driscol Update
I'd like to thank everyone for their prayers and well
wishes to Joe Driscol. Also thanks everyone who showed up for the
ride Sunday with a card. I plan on delivering them to him sometime
today. He is doing great by the way and is already home.
We have a video
Check out the website for a great video Cliff made of
our after meeting ride down the coast to Ocean Sides in Flagler.
There are also some fun pictures gleaned from the video. Thank you
Cliff. And I can't forget Debora, our new photographer for recording
all the fun we have. By the way, any photos you want to be seen
that you take and would like to share of our events, especially if
she isn't there, message or email them to Debora, Jere or me and we
will gladly see they get posted.
