Safety Tip of the Week

Speed Also Means Feet Per Second

Most of the time we think of our speed, in miles per hour. After all, this is how our speedometers display it and this is how our speed limit signs are posted. As relevant as this is for making sure we are traveling at the appropriate rate of speed, it doesn’t really give us a lot of data for second to second decisions and applications. Hence we should at least consider the distance we travel in a second.

For every increment of mile per hour speed, we travel roughly one and a half feet. At 30 mph we are traveling 45 feet every second. We can easily see that even at 30 mph, if we spent one second too long looking at scenery, a GPS or the God forbid, the other lane; 45 feet could have us in the oncoming lane or even off the road.

I won’t even talk about speeds over 30 mph, I’m sure everyone can do the math. But I will ask you to consider even extremely slow speeds. Let’s say you are doing a u turn and you are only going 10 mph. Just one second looking at a cone, the curb, the shoulder or the ground can have you 15 feet out of your intended path of travel. You just missed the u turn and possibly dropped your bike.

The take away here of course not the math conversion, but being aware of how far your bike is traveling in a second and spending more time looking at where you want to go. And again, never look at the ground. Have faith, it’s always there.

Harley Trivia

HOG

Ever wonder how the hog got to be associated with Harleys? I've actually been asked this question many times. Originally it began when a Harley Davidson Race Team had a pig for a mascot. Whenever they won a race, they would make a victory lap with the pig on the motorcycle. Later, large American made motorcycles became known as hogs because of their size as compared to the European and Japanese bikes. Harley Davidson actually tried to copyright the word Hog but was not allowed to because large motorcycles were already known as hogs.
Eventually they were able to copyright H.O.G. for Harley Owners Group of course and in 2006 they were able to change their stock symbol from HDI to HOG.

Monthly Meeting

Meeting for will be Saturday, July 13, 2019 at  Adamec Harley Davidson, 8909 Baymeadows Rd.,Jacksonville, FL.  Please join us for coffee at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting begins at 9:30 a.m.  A short lunch ride will follow.

Tidbits

National Dues

I'd like to remind everyone to be mindful of your national dues. Technically, your chapter dues expire when your national dues do. This is not about nit picking but it is a liability issue. Probably the best thing about HOG is the insurance they provide when we ride as a group. This is one of those things that doesn't matter until it does. I'd also like to ask you, should you realize your national membership has lapsed and you want to participate on a ride, just ask for a waiver from one of the road captains.
Also, if you have never considered a Life Membership, if you have been a member for a few years they usually give you a tremendous break. When I became a Life Member, they applied 5 years worth of dues toward the Life Membership. For me it was a no brainer. I saw in a forum this morning that they are still doing this. I went to the HOG website and it said to call and the prices vary. It might be worth a phone call.

Local Dues Sale

I would also like to remind everyone of a sale we have every year on dues. Please share this with prospective new members. Between July 1 and October 31 our dues go down to $10 for new members. If they join in November, the price again becomes $20 but we will cover them for the coming new year. To avoid any confusion like last year, remember, a member who joins in November must sign a waiver-application for the rest of this year but another for the following year which we can accept after December1.

Up and Coming

Progressive Dinner

One of the chapters favorite activities is the Progressive Dinner ride. A ride that visits three of our members homes for hor d'ouevres, entrees, and then desserts. This has been scheduled for Sunday, October 6. Ruth and Scott have already volunteered to do the desserts, so we need someone for the hor d'ouvres and someone for the entrees. For anyone not familiar the chapter reimburses those who prepare the meal parts. There will be a sign up sheet in the future.

Grand Opening

If all goes well, the Grand Opening of our new dealership is scheduled for the weekend of October 5.

Unity Pink Ride and Chapter Meeting Day

The following week after Grand Opening, we have our first event. The Unity Pink Ride, previously know as Think Pink will be staged out of our new dealership on October 12. We are on the hook for registration for that event and if possible, to also help with staging and parking. So we need volunteers. Please set this date aside on your calendar if possible. Details will be available.
Also note that this is also our usual meeting day so we will be having our chapter meeting at 2:30 p.m. after the Unity Pink Ride. Hopefully many of us will already be on site since the new dealership will also be our new meeting place.

LOH

The July LOH will be Nancy Powers. Join her and LOH at Brisky's BBQ at 3009 US 1 South in Saint Augustine at 6:00 p.m. on July 23.

Also we are raffling off a beautiful quilt created by Lynn Harris. Tickets are $10 or 3 for $25 for this one of a kind work of art valued at over $2000. The drawing will be at our Christmas Part on December 14 and you do not have to be present to win. Photos, details and a bio on Lynn are now on the website: ancientcityhog.com/quilt
