Safety Tip of the Week

Lightning – The Rubber Tires Will Protect Me Right?

As Deb and I were riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2017, a motorcyclist was struck by lightning and killed near Mount Mitchell. As we were coming home from south Florida Sunday, tragedy struck again. Traffic started backing up between Ormond and Bunnell so we jumped off the interstate at Exit 273 to follow US 1 home. We learned afterwards that lightning struck a motorcyclist and was the reason for the traffic.  It hadn’t been determined if it was the lightning strike or the subsequent crash was the cause of death.
These are just two lightning – motorcyclist  deaths that have been close to us in the last few years. I’ve learned that there have been twelve of these fatalities in Florida since 2006. I also have a close friend I used to ride with in Memphis who was struck and was fortunate enough to survive.  This should debunk the myth that the rubber on the tires insulates and protects you.

Harley Trivia

In 1953 Harley Davidson's biggest competitor closed their doors. Surviving the Great Depression and two World Wars, Indian just couldn't keep their doors open. Since  that time several people across three continents have fought for the Indian name and copyright. One US company simply added S&S motors to an aftermarket frame, added the Indian type fenders and a fancy paint job with the Indian logo and called it an Indian. Since S&S is still in business, the people who bought those are better off than the group who bought from the next group who actually developed a new and unique engine but failed miserably.
Now they are owned by a Canadian company, Polaris, who sacrificed their previous V-Twin market attempt, the Victory, to go all in for the Indian. Only time will tell how that will play out.
I don't begrudge them for marketing the Indian name, that's just business. Just understand that if you buy an Indian you are not buying the piece of history and nostalgia they are promoting. Very few if any riders who buy one of these new machines have ever ridden a real Indian. Do the math.

Up and Coming

Progressive Dinner

One of the chapters favorite activities is the Progressive Dinner ride. A ride that visits three of our members homes for hor d'ouevres, entrees, and then desserts. This has been scheduled for Sunday, October 6. Ruth and Scott have already volunteered to do the desserts, so we need someone for the hor d'ouvres and someone for the entrees. For anyone not familiar the chapter reimburses those who prepare the meal parts. There will be a sign up sheet in the future.
