Safety Tip of the Week

Wobble

This is a subject that is so controversial, even among experts, I hesitate to even put it the newsletter. However one thing all agree on is it can be very very bad, even deadly and you don’t want it.

A wobble is a rapid oscillation of the front end of the motorcycle and is sometimes called a tank slapper. These oscillations occur between six and ten times a second. They can be so violent they can jerk the handle bars from the hands and frequently result in crashes.

There are too many causes for wobbles to happen to cover in a safety tip of the week. However the ones most important in my opinion are the ones you can control. These involve proper maintenance. Keep your tires properly inflated. Make sure you or your mechanic is paying attention to your wheel bearings, neck bearings and spokes if you have them.

What do you do if you find yourself in this predicament? I emphasize I am not an expert and even the experts disagree. My opinion, and I repeat, only my opinion is first of all hang on tight. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. And since wobbles have a tendency to happen in certain speed ranges, personally I want to shed some speed. Remember, many experts disagree with that. Some say throttle up. Also it is my opinion not to add any front brake to the equation. There is enough going on up there without adding to it.

The purpose of this safety tip, since I freely admit not having expert knowledge is: 1. Know what it is so if it happens to you, it won’t be a complete surprise.

2. Do everything you can do in advance to prevent it from happening. Maintain your bike.

Monthly Meeting

Meeting for will be Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the VFW-6184 US 1 South, St. Augustine. Please join us for coffee at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting begins at 9:30 a.m.  A short ride to St. Mary's Seafood at World Golf Village will follow.

Activities Meeting and more stuff

The second activities meeting of the year has come and gone. Thanks to all who showed up and participated. Thank you to all the road captains who showed up and those who could not but sent rides in to be submitted their absence. Of course thank you to the officers, many who are also road captains. Again a special thanks to Kathy for running the meeting and the calendar. As this goes out she already has the calendar updated through July. Check it out.
I like to extend special thanks and a possible congrats to Wes Powel for leading two on the rides. Looks like we may have our next road captain. He is certainly Road Captain material. He loves Harleys, riding, back roads and rabbit trails, our chapter, and he comes to the activities meetings. He also has a wonderful supporting wife who also loves all of the above.
That gives rise to personally thank all the wives who support their husbands who are officers and road captains. Many of these fine ladies aren't even able to ride or at least ride as much as they would like.

Crystal River Over nighter

A fun time was had by all on the Crystal River trip. Ralph did an excellent job of planning the whole week end. I appreciate the planning that goes into a trip like this from securing the lodging (at a discount I may add) to making reservations to eat and activities.
A bonus was we were able to meet some of the Chrystal River HOG officers for lunch and then given a tour of their new dealership which is really beautiful. For a minute I thought I was at Smokey Mountain with the giant beams and river rock construction. These were  a very warm and welcoming people and information and ideas were exchanged.

Up and Coming

Progressive Dinner

One of the chapters favorite activities is the Progressive Dinner ride. A ride that visits three of our members homes for hor d'ouevres, entrees, and then desserts. This has been scheduled for Sunday, October 6. Ruth and Scott have already volunteered to do the desserts, so we need someone for the hor d'ouvres and someone for the entrees. For anyone not familiar the chapter reimburses those who prepare the meal parts. There will be a sign up sheet in the future.

More Over Nighters Planned

I'm happy to announce that, at the members request, more over nighters are planned. We will be having an Everglades over nighter and an over nighter to the Golden Isles. Lyle also mentioned possibly putting something together in the Smokies. When that man retires he will be like a bobcat let out of a cage; I know the feeling. Watch the calendar for the dates.

Harley Trivia
Ever hear someone older refer to a Harley as a 74? At one time it was an iconic name; here's why. In 1922 Harley invented their v-twin engine. It had 74 cubic inches. This was revolutionary at the time and for years Harley made engines that had 74 cubic inches. Many people referred to the older Harleys by the type of head they had. But guess what? There were 74s made for the Knucklehead, the Panhead and even one of the Shovelhead engines was referred to by some as a 74 even though technically it was a 75. Well the Evos broke the 74 cycle in 1984 (no pun intended), with the 1340 cc or 82 cubic inch motor. Even then they kept making 1200 cc Sportsters which were 73 cubic inch and lovingly called 74s. And by the way, if you are lucky enough to run across someone who still refers to Harleys as 74s, put your cell phone down and talk that person. That have, no doubt, some great stories.
