Safety Tip of the Week
Are you a 1%er?
No not the outlaw M/C kind. Ken Hill, a famous motorcycle instructor, was asked what
percent of his new students could stop their motorcycle at
its maximum stopping ability. His answer was 1%. So
guess what? We all need to work a lot harder on our emergency
braking. Begin each brake application with an initially light
squeeze on the lever to allow the fork springs to collapse
controllably and the front contact patch spread out as weight
transfers forward. This initial squeeze can (and sometimes must)
happen quickly but never abruptly. Don’t stab and grab, the forks
must have time to load. As long as you are braking smoothly and
lightly at first they have plenty of time to load.
I can’t assume everyone out there has anti-lock brakes. For
those who don’t, please remember if your rear wheel locks up and
begins to slide, keep it locked and simply counter steer to keep
the bike in a straight line. Releasing the rear brake while in a
skid can cause a high side crash as the rear wheel will violently
come back into tracking the front.
When the worst happens and we need to get the motorcycle stopped
quickly, what you do can mean the difference between riding away on
your bike and riding away in an ambulance. Our first priority when
riding on two wheels should be mastering control skills.
Let’s strive to be 1%ers. No not the outlaw M/C kind.
