A Cautionary Tale (submitted by Scott Emmans)

In March we were riding our bike down highway 13, approaching Rt 207...a ride our group does frequently. I ran over something that popped the back tire, so I got the bike to the wide spot at 13 & 207 and safe off the road. I got out my HOG card and called for HOG Roadside Assistance. Hog subs this to a company called Road America who called back to say they had a tow contractor who was on his way.
After an hour a bike-only tow truck showed up called All Out Custom Transport. It was getting late & when I told him I wanted it to go to Adamec Bay Meadows he gets out his mileage calculator and said it was 42 miles, the HOG limit was 40 miles, so I would have to pay for the tow. He would not load the bike until I agreed, and after clipping my credit card for $135.00 he loaded the bike and we went to Adamec.
About 2 months later the tow guy called me to ask if I had a copy of his receipt to me, that his paperwork was lost...blown away at the side of the road. I sent him a copy but then started thinking the whole thing was fishy. Now months later, I called All Out Custom to get a quote to haul a Harley from Hastings to Bay Meadows...he calculated and gave me the price of $150.00, so I knew what I had paid him previously was full bore. I then called HOG/Road-America who confirmed they had paid him as well, and after their investigation they are sending me a check for the overcharge.

The important lesson is that as a regular HOG member you do have roadside assistance...up to $100.00. Now knowing how much it costs to tow, that one-time $100.00 is all but useless. For $19.95 you get unlimited towing for up to two bikes, nationwide. Everyone should be aware that the basic coverage is squat and you really should get the extra coverage.
