Safety Tip of the Week
Don’t Sacrifice Control For Speed
I
heard a motors officer at a recent parking lot practice make that
quote. You can put a monkey on a motorcycle and he can ride it if
it’s going fast enough. Heck, you don’t even need a monkey. Honda
did a PR stunt in the seventies by kicking a Gold Wing out of the
back of a pickup truck going 45 mph. After it bounced a few times
it righted itself and rolled some distance on its on. I don’t
know what the point was that Honda was trying to make but it just
tells me that it takes no skill to sit on a motorcycle and ride in
a straight line.
So
what does the above mean? It means that a motorcycle needs constant
input to control it. That input can come from braking, leaning,
counter steering, counter leaning, giving it throttle, dragging the
rear brake while giving it throttle, using the friction zone, or
any number of things you can actively do to cause the motorcycle to
respond to what you want it to do instead of just relying on speed
and the gyroscopic effect to keep the bike up right. If you aren’t
exercising constant control by some type of input, you are simply a
passenger.
Road Captains
New Sheriff in town
Bob Bloom is our new Head Road Captain, and doing a
fine job I might add. Please make sure he gets all the sign in sheets and
contact him to make any changes in rides such as leads, sweeps,
times and locations. You may contact him at headroadcaptain@ancientcityhog.com.

SMART - Smart
Motorcycle And Riding Technique
This is the FDOT
funded class taught by police and sheriff motor officers. It is a
similar format to some of the commercially taught classes that
begin with Ride Like A … I think this is actually better and
it is free, well paid for by tax dollars. Nothing is free. More
instructors, more room, more cones, more personal hands on
instructions. Gainesville Police got their funding again and will
begin classes again in January. Watch the calendar and
future newsletters for details.

Thanks
Thank you Debora,
Fred, Bob, Lyle, and Wes for working your buts off at the Light the
City Ride out of Bay Meadows Adamec. We had a lot of fun, enjoyed
some good Memphis-Jax BBQ and later were fed at the event. Thanks
Bob for sweeping my ride to Memphis-Jax.
Thanks Merle and Fred for a nice ride down A1-A to Ocean
Sides. More good food and comradery and were even treated to
special treats to show the restaurants appreciation.
Thanks Frank for takings us down some rabbit trails to
get to the back side of Renegades. I was happy to have swept that
ride. Many of us had the catfish at Franks recommendation, me
included. Three giant filets and two sides caused a call for doggy
bags. Great ride Frank and great recommendation.
It was definitely a riding weekend; three days in the
saddle. Love our club and love our state. It was 22 degrees
yesterday in Memphis.

No one likes criticism, but it is inevitable
when you take risks, express opinions, or follow your dreams. You
can't allow potential criticism to hold you back from taking action
— unless you want to remain stuck in life.
