Safety Tip of the Week

Kill Switch

Anyone know what FINE-C means? It’s an old acronym  we used to use, to start our motorcycles. It stands for Fuel-Ignition-Neutral-Engine Kill-Choke.  A lot has changed since that acronym was around. Of course we no longer have to turn the fuel on and we also don’t have chokes anymore.
Back in the day when we used that acronym, there was a reason for the order and it wasn’t just to make the catchy acronym work out. Actually there was more than one reason and those are the reasons I want to talk about today because the order is just as important today as it ever was.
The order that is still significant is the ignition switch and the engine kill switch. And the reverse order is the most important. In other words, shutting the bike down, so the reverse of FINE-C applies.
The take away here is you should always shut your bike down with the kill switch and not the ignition.
The first reason is that in over 60% of accidents, fuel leaks and spills are present. So if you are in the habit of always  shutting your bike down with the kill switch, it will be faster and second nature to shut the bike down. We instinctively know where all the controls are on the handle bars and in an emergency hopefully it will be easier to shut the bike down. After the helmet and other safety gear saved us it would really suck to catch on fire.
The other reason is especially on the Harley dressers, the ignition switches used to go out a lot on people that shut their bikes down with the ignition switch instead of the kill switch. The reason is the kill switch is simply that, a switch. The ignition switch on the other hand is more like a breaker. It manages a lot of electricity. It controls the lights, fuel pump, well pretty much everything electrical on the bike is controlled through that switch. By killing the power on the handlebars, it at least cuts the work load of the ignition switch in half. Hence savings in money and convenience.

Up and Coming

Christmas Party

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at our annual Christmas Party this Saturday. Don't forget to bring a secret Santa gift. Participation is optional but you must bring a gift to recieve a gift. It should be a value of 15 to 20 dollars and wrapped.

Activities Meeting

Please don't forget our simi-annual activities meeting is Sunday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the dealership in our meeting room upstairs. This is when we plan the rides and events for the next six months. All Road Captains are strongly urged to attend and present leads and sweeps they are willing to manage. It is also our officers meeting but you don not have to be an officer or a road captain to attend. Show up with suggestions and your imagination.

Christmas Wrapping

Now that we have out own store, we have been asked to volunteer to wrap Christmas presents at the dealership. There is a signup sheet on our website. Adamec furnishes everything, all that is required from us is our labor. We are allowed to have a tip jar for donations to the chapter and as always this too is worth 100 rewards points.
