Safety Tip of the Week

I’m Stopping, Now What?

Make no mistake; emergency stopping is stressful, especially if it is a real emergency. While you are in this emergency situation, and you are on your brakes using all the skills you have, there are still other things you should be doing, during and after you stop.
This is where practice comes in. As they say, “you will fight like you train.” Every time you stop, you should be downshifting as you are braking. Whether it is an emergency or just a mundane stop, by the time the bike comes to rest, you should be in first gear.
The reason for this is no matter what the emergency is; there could be other vehicles behind you making emergency stops also. So as you are congratulating yourself for your skillful stop, your work is not over. Now that you have addressed the danger in front of you it is time to access your six. You should be watching your mirrors ready to move in a split second. You can only do this if you are in first gear. Moving ahead, right or left just a few feet could prevent a disaster from behind.
If you practice this every time you stop, when you need to move quickly, you will already be in first gear and not even remember how you got there.

Harley Trivia

Harley’s Belated 50th Anniversary

First of all, I would like to give Wes Powers credit  for supplying information for this article. He likes history as I do and has an amazing amount of knowledge about HD history. Thank you Wes.
Most who ride Harleys know or should know that Harley Davidson was founded in 1903; along with Ford. I have a leather Ford-Harley baseball cap among my possessions celebrating 100 years.
I don’t know when Harley started celebrating anniversaries and having Special Anniversary editions but in 1954 they came out with a special fender cap with a 50th Anniversary Logo.
But wait, the 50th anniversary was in 1953. Yep, Harley may have forgotten their own Golden Anniversary. I don’t know how this could have happened as it was the year I was born. I do know the Korean War was going on and it is also the year Indian Motorcycles went out of business. That is pretty significant in the motorcycle world considering that at one time they were the largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet. So we’ll have to give them credit for just surviving in those hard times.
They have since corrected the mistake by making 1978 models, 75th anniversary editions, and consistently celebrating all anniversaries every 5 years on the correct dates.

Monthly Meeting

Meeting for will be Saturday,  November 09, 2019 at the new dealership, 380 Outlet Mall Rd., Saint Augustine, FL. Please join us for coffee and fellowship at 9:00 p.m. and the meeting starts at 9:30 p.m.

Tidbits

Unity Pink Ride

I would like to thank all our volunteers who help make our first event at the new dealership a success. The Unity Pink Ride was fun for all and benefited the event itself, the dealership and our chapter. We met a lot of new people and signed up several new members. We also sold a lot of raffle tickets. We still have tickets left so please buy and take some to sell.

I also would like to give a very special thank you to Manya, Kirby, and the members from our sister chapters who showed up to help. We really appreciate your help, experience and guidance in making this a great event.

Progressive Dinner Ride

Another fun and sucessful Progressive Dinner has come and gone. The food was delicious and the riding and timing was perfect, as was the weather. I was surprised not to see any new members but there is always next year. Many thanks go to the members who prepared food and had us into their homes. Thanks again Ken, Julie, Cliff, Nancy, Charles, Francis, Ruth and Scott for the food part; Fred and Frank for the lead and sweep; Debora for doing the poker hands; the old cranky guy who did the 50/50; the group who evaluated all the poker hands ; and all the members who showed up for a fun time.

A Very Special Thank You

I would especially like to thank Michael "Bear" Cooper for his wonderful contribution to our chapter. For those who havn't seen it, it is a custom flag stand that carries "Old Glory and our Chapter flag. The base includes a Harley Davidson crank shaft with the iconic twin pistons. We will proudly display it at many of our events and it will live in our new "HOG Pen" for all to enjoy.

This was in the last newsletter but I am in awe of such an awesome gift to our chapter. And it is on display in our new HOG Pen.

Mountain Ride

The Smokey Mountain Ride was a fun time for all who attended. Lyle showed us some rides that were a pleasant surprise that were amazingly dragonesque. I hope we can have another ride like this in the future. We were blessed with good riding and foliage views. Anyone who plans on visiting should consider staying at the Best Westen Smokey Mountain in Waynesville. Their gas fire pits make a great place to end the day with a beverage and even a pizza.

National Dues

I'd like to remind everyone to be mindful of your national dues. Technically, your chapter dues expire when your national dues do. This is not about nit picking but it is a liability issue. Probably the best thing about HOG is the insurance they provide when we ride as a group. This is one of those things that doesn't matter until it does. I'd also like to ask you, should you realize your national membership has lapsed and you want to participate on a ride, just ask for a waiver from one of the road captains.

Local Dues Sale

I would also like to remind everyone of a sale we have  going on. Because of the Grand Opening of our new membership, any new members can pay $20 and we will take you all the way through 2020. They will still have to sign a waiver for both years. Please share this information with potential members.

To make becoming a new member even easier, Fred has displayed new flyers around the dealership with all the information needed. Thank you Fred and thank you Missy for allowing us to do this.

A Note For New Members On Dues
Another item left over from last month for the benefit of so many new members.

This hopefully will clear up several questions we got at the membership table during the Grand Opening. Following is the answers to the most FAQ.
1. You must be a National HOG member to be a local chapter member.
2. Your wife, girl friend or who ever may want to join you in our rides, parties and activities must also be a National member to be a local member. They can be an associate member however for $25 dollars a year.
3. There are no associate local memberships. All member dues are $20 a year. Look at it this way, the passengers have just as much fun as the riders. My wife would argue that they have more. And riding is not the only thing we do.
4. A guest may participate in two ride events without joining. However they must sign a waiver for each event. After that they must make a decision to join. Usually they do after they see how much fun we have.
5. Memberships are not transferable from one chapter to another. Each chapter is an independant organization supproted only by our members and sponsoring dealership. I'm still amused by one gentleman who stormed off because we couldn't transfer his dues from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
6. The number one rule and what we do is,"Ride and Have Fun."

Web Page

For the benefit of new members and some of the less active ones the website is our go to place for information about our chapter, future rides and events, links to sign up for events such as parties, picnics, volunteering, etc. Jere does an amazing job.

Up and Coming

Lets Buy and Sell Some Raffle Tickets

Time is running out for buying and selling tickets for the beautiful quilt. We will have the drawing at the Christmas Party but you do not have to be present to win. Go back and look at the pictures and details on the link of our website' If you've already bought some, buy some more. I am.  And sell some

Christmas Party

Don't forget to sign up for our annual Christmas party on December the 14th. Information including a signup sheet and dealine is on the website. It is a great time including good food, music, fellowship. It is also a great way for new members to meet other members and see what we are about. Remember, this is your chapter.

Meeting Day Cookout

I'd like to remind everyone to patronize first Meeting Day Cookout and to thank our first volunteers. All food is free with a donation. There will be a tip jar to accept your donations. All proceeds go to funding the Chapter which in turn, historically, has supported various Charities including, but not limited to, K9's for Warriors, Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, Unity Pink and others.
I'd also like to thank our volunteers in advance for donating their time and remind everyone that their is a signup sheet on the website. As always, anyone volunteering will get 100 rewards points

Christmas Wrapping

Now that we have out own store, we have been asked to volunteer to wrap Christmas presents at the dealership. There will be a signup sheet on our website. Adamec furnishes everything, all that is required from us is our labor. We are allowed to have a tip jar for donations to the chapter and as always this too is worth 100 rewards points.

Tip Jar Needed

Speaking of tip jars. Can anyone donate one of the large water bottles for collecting donations? I'm speaking of the large bottles that are turned up side down in a dispenser. I think they are about five or six gallons.

Not sure at this time when the next LOH specific event will be.This is such a busy time of year for all but don't dispair, we have a great group of ladies and we can't stay apart for long.
