Safety Tip of the Week

Dress For Sweat

We all know that sweating is a mechanism for cooling down the body. How we as bikers dress for that still depends on the temperature. When it’s warm outside we begin to sweat when our skin temperature reaches around 90 degrees. This works great as long as the air temperature is below 93 degrees. Our skin really doesn’t cool itself above 93 because this is about the upper limit of what our skin temperature should be for a core temperature to remain at 98.6 degrees. Above 93 the warmer air actually begins to warm our bodies because the evaporating sweat has no cooler air to dissipate our heat. To make matters worse, we begin to sweat more and lose valuable more hydration as our bodies try to cool itself.

Is there anything we can do? Actually there is. When it gets above 93 degrees, it’s time to cover up. While this won’t make us feel cooler, it will conserve water loss. Desert dwellers and smart construction workers know this. Studies show that by covering your head and arms you can cut your water loss almost in half. This will help prevent severe dehydration and possibly heat stroke. Heat kills more people in this country that hurricanes, tornados and floods.

Another Member Gone

I regret to announce that one of our past members has passed. Dick Sherrod was one of our past members and to my understanding, one of the longest running members. He also served Ancient City HOG as Safety Officer and was loved by all who knew him. He loved ACH so much it was actually in his obituary. I am including a copy of his last email sent to Fred Harris just three days before his death.

"Just wanted you and your great club of riders to know how much I have enjoyed the comradeship , friendships and well planned rides.
Meaningful to me.
Thanks ride safe...,
Dick"

The chapters primary officers unanimously approved a donation of $100 in his honor to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Monthly Meeting

Meeting for will be Saturday, July 13, 2019 at  Adamec Harley Davidson, 8909 Baymeadows Rd.,Jacksonville, FL.  Please join us for coffee at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting begins at 9:30 a.m.  A short lunch ride will follow.

Up and Coming

Progressive Dinner

One of the chapters favorite activities is the Progressive Dinner ride. A ride that visits three of our members homes for hor d'ouevres, entrees, and then desserts. This has been scheduled for Sunday, October 6. Ruth and Scott have already volunteered to do the desserts, so we need someone for the hor d'ouvres and someone for the entrees. For anyone not familiar the chapter reimburses those who prepare the meal parts. There will be a sign up sheet in the future.

More Over Nighters Planned

I'm happy to announce that, at the members request, more over nighters are planned. We will be having an Everglades over nightery but will be rescheduled in 2020  and an over nighter to the Golden Isles. Lyle also mentioned possibly putting something together in the Smokies. When that man retires he will be like a bobcat let out of a cage; I know the feeling. Watch the calendar for the dates.

Harley Trivia

After the Great Depression Harley created a motorcycle known as the EL model. It was better know as the Knucklehead for the knuckle shape of the valve covers. They produced 9812 of these cool motorcycles. Obviously they are in high demand for collectors.
I once knew a farmer from Arkansas who had one painted in the John Deere tractor colors. He would ride this to the state rallies and it had such a low center of gravity, no one could touch him in the slow race.

Inspiration

The more I want to get something done, the less I call it work. - Richard Bach

Change what your view point of work is. You can look at it as being miserable and tedious, or you can find joy in what you accomplish.
