Safety Tip of the Week
I Thought You Were Going TO Run It
A
long time ago in a land far away. Nope, this is not a fairy tale
and unfortunately this really happened. Sometimes real life stories
make the best learning tales. A stale yellow light goes red. Rider
number one stops. Rider number two plows into rider number two
causing injuries and bike damage.
As
if this situation isn’t bad enough, rider number two insists it
isn’t her fault because, “we usually blow stale yellow lights and
fresh reds.” The quote isn’t accurate and I wasn’t there but this
was her inference. Make no mistake; if you hit the bike in front of
you, it is your fault! It doesn’t matter what you think the bike in
front of you is going to do, you are responsible for what you do
and hopefully that is not running red lights and running over
bikes in front of you. This is where that part of “ride your own
ride” comes in.
I
haven’t been hit. However I have had riders staggered to my rear,
blow lights I easily and safely stopped for. It makes me wonder,”
What if they had been behind me. Could they have stopped? Are they
in control of their bike?”
I
challenge you to challenge yourself. As a yellow light is getting
stale and you begin to anticipate the riders in front of you
blowing the light, how about anticipating that they may stop.
Decide at that moment to practice your emergency braking skills.
This
is also a good time for a disclaimer. Evidently there has been in
the past at least one delusional member, there could be more. It is
NOT Ancient City protocol or recommended practice to run red
lights! You will see it happen, of course, but these are
individuals making personal decisions, not executing chapter
policy.
“I
thought you were going to run it,” is not an excuse.
HOG Stuff
Ride 365
Note:
registering for Ride 365 does three
things. 1. It adds to your lifetime HOG accumulation miles. For
this, it doesn't matter when or how many times you register. Your
lifetime miles will always be added. 2.
It signs you up for the years Ride 365 mileage. For this you must
registered twice in one year; once as early as possible in the year
and once as late in the year as possible. Even if you registered
late in December and rode tens of thousands of miles, if you only
register once in the calendar year, you will get 0 miles. 3.
It signs you up for the chapter challenge where we compete with
other chapters across the country. If you are a member of two or
more chapters you must go to the HOG members website and choose
which chapter you want your miles to go to. The dealer can't do
this for you.
